**Abstract deadline: November 21, 2008**

The Natures Conference, open to graduate students in all area of
humanities research, will be held at La Sierra University (Riverside, CA)
on February 20, 2009. Proposals for 20 minute paper presentations on a
wide range of topics broadly related to the theme of “NATURES:
Authenticity, Artificiality, and Authorship” are invited.

Disciplines across the humanities have participated in the effort to
define or debunk what constitutes the natural and unnatural, authenticity
and artificiality, within our understanding of, and experience with human
nature, the natural world, and the nature of human expression. Texts
ranging from medieval spiritual autobiography, to enlightenment
portraiture, to feminist historiography, to 21st century television
dramas such as 'Lost,' have been part of the artistic inquiry into the
mysterious diversity of human natures and their place in the natural

Papers relevant to the following subjects are particularly sought, but
all submissions will be considered:
Creation stories: mythology, theology, and authorship
Apocalyptic texts: the creation of destruction
Nature gone wild: natural disasters in art, film, history, literature,
and religion
The cycle of life in literature and history: birth, death, beginnings,
Landscapes and cityscapes
Unnatural nature: science, illicit creation, and composition
The faces of nature: personification and representation
The nature of race: performance and authenticity
Mother nature: gender, creativity, and authorship
Read vs. Reel: authenticity and innovation in written and filmic texts
Ecocriticism: investigating the intersection of nature and human behavior

Submissions of paper titles, 50 word abstracts and 250 word summaries
should be directed to gradengl_at_lasierra.edu by November 21, 2008 with
the subject line “Natures Conference Submission.” Please include in the
body of your email your name, institution, area of study, year in
program, and email address.

Notification of accepted proposals will be made by January
5, 2009, at which time information regarding the application form and
registration fees ($30) will be distributed.

The Natures Conference will be held at La Sierra University, 4500
Riverwalk Parkway, Riverside, CA 92515.
