CFP: [Graduate] The Power of the Word: Twentieth Century African American Writers (3/01/09; 4/18/09)

full name / name of organization:
Sharleen Dickinson

This panel seeks papers that examine the ways African American writers of
the twentieth century demonstrate “power” through their work. Papers on
poets, novelists, non-fiction writers, and dramatists are welcome. We are
interested in a variety of writers such as Langston Hughes, J. California
Cooper, John Edgar Wideman, Ann Petry, Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, Edward
P. Jones, August Wilson, Rita Dove, and Ernest Gaines, to name a few.
Papers that pay attention to the writer’s interpretation of political
and/or personal struggle, and how the “word” is used in that conflict are
of special interest. MLA format is requested. The deadline is March 1,
2009, but early submissions are requested. This panel will be part of of
the Tenth Annual Southern Connecticut State University Graduate English
Conference: Reading/Teaching/Theorizing/Writing held in New Haven, April
18, 2009.
