CFP: [Graduate] "Urges": Manuscript Postgraduate Conference, Manchester UK

ManuScript* invites papers from postgraduates in all branches and
periods of literary and cultural studies for a 1-day conference on the
broad theme of "Urges". The conference will take place on 20th
February 2009.

Papers are welcomed from a diversity of fields and trans-disciplinary
viewpoints. Approaches might include, though are not restricted to:

- drive, desire, compulsion
- criminalising, politicising, pathologising urges
- associations with the primal; or, urges as authentic,
incontrovertible, justifiable
- tropes of display and concealment
- discourses of appeal
- élan vital
- catharsis, repression, subdual
- implications for agency
- urge and affect
- urgency (and technology; temporality; the imperative)
- urge and excess (or, splurge)

Papers should be 20 minutes long, and 250-word abstracts emailed to
EAS.Manuscript_at_manchester.ac.uk by 23rd January 2009. In addition to
academic papers, submissions of creative writing are welcomed.

*ManuScript is the peer-reviewed postgraduate journal in English and
American Studies from the University of Manchester.
