Call for Papers: Graduate Student Conference

In conjunction with the 2009 International Conference on Peace sponsored
by the Division of International Studies, the Department of English and
Modern Foreign Languages at Jackson State University is issuing a call
for papers for a series of sessions on topics in global or comparative
literature.

This symposium invites consideration of the dialogue between literature
and culture along a wide range of interdisciplinary areas. Since the
conference places particular emphasis on aspects of cultural sensitivity,
race relations, gender disparities, democratic ideals, and environmental
issues, papers that address some facet of these areas will receive the
highest priority.

Suggested topics from global or comparative literature might include but
are not limited to:

• Ethics of post-colonial literature
• Eradication, redemption or reconstruction of myths
• Historical relativism
• Crisis in representation
• Representations of democracy in world literatures
• Capitalism and the rise of the middle class
• Use of gender is the division of public and private
• Globalization and aesthetics
• Performance and perceptions of class
• Renewing and/or resisting aesthetic ideology
• Gentrification and the bourgeois
• Marginality, “alternative” culture, and the subaltern
• Race, ethnicity, and hyphenated identities
• Gender, power, and agency

The deadline for proposals: March 1, 2009
Notification for accepted papers: March 15, 2009
