Papers invited for a proposed panel titled “Conceptualizing Chance in
American Narrative†at the American Literature Association Annual
Conference to be held in San Francisco, May 22-25, 2007. From one
perspective, chance disrupts the ordering tendencies of narrative; the
goal of this panel is to explore the various strategies writers have used
to incorporate moments of chance—spontaneity, disorder, accidents,
linguistic uncertainty—into their narratives. Papers that consider
innovative uses of chance are especially welcome, as are papers that
consider possible political or narratological valances of chance in
narrative.
