Papers invited for a proposed panel titled “Conceptualizing Chance in
American Narrative” at the American Literature Association Annual
Conference to be held in San Francisco, May 22-25, 2007. From one
perspective, chance disrupts the ordering tendencies of narrative; the
goal of this panel is to explore the various strategies writers have used
to incorporate moments of chanceâ€"spontaneity, disorder, accidents,
linguistic uncertaintyâ€"into their narratives. Papers that consider
innovative uses of chance are especially welcome, as are papers that
consider possible political or narratological valances of chance in
narrative.
