Impersonality and Emotion in Contemporary British Art
Université Paul Valéry - Montpellier 3
3-4 February 2006

A CERVEC Conference
In association with : Université Paul Valéry, Équipe d’accueil des Pays Anglophones, Région Languedoc-Roussillon, Pôle Universitaire Européen de Montpellier et du Languedoc-Roussillon.

Impersonality and Emotion in Contemporary British Art will be the theme of the 2006 conference.
After the 2003 and 2004 conferences on « Impersonality and Emotion in Modernist/Postmodernist British literature, », the 2005 conference was devoted to modernist British art.One of the objectives of this last meeting in the series of four conferences on impersonality and emotion will be to try and assess in which way the category of impersonality, notoriously associated with modernism, is allowed to migrate into a later corpus of British artefacts representative of the fields of film, the radio, painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, etc.
The questions that will be tackled will address the way in which artistic manifestations that keep playing with aesthetic codes and conventions are still concerned with emotion. In other terms, in a body of artefacts that reputedly favour such impersonal practices as ludic overkill or ethical concern and in which self-referential games have come to assume full hegemony, is there room left for emotion? And what type of emotion? According to which modalities and finality?
