Close Relations: The =91Spaces=92 of Greek and Roman Theatre

Topics for papers

This conference examines the =91spaces=92 of Greek and Roman theatre and=20=

the relationships between them.

The word =91theatre=92 refers to something that is both a material =
entity=20
(the performance space or theatre building) and the more fluid activity=20=

that takes place in it, and we are particularly interested in exploring=20=

the relationship between these two aspects in antiquity, over time, and=20=

in the contemporary world.

Our conference title, The =91Spaces=92 of Greek and Roman Theatre, =
suggests=20
investigations in =96 but does not restrict them to =96 the fields of:

     * archaeology (physical and virtual reconstructions of theatre=20
spaces)
     * performance making (physical, textual, imaginative and conceptual=20=

space in relation to the physical, cultural, social and political)
     * classic studies (the context of these relationships in antiquity)
     * reception studies (the changing relations between these spaces=20
over time).

Papers of 20 or 40 minutes duration are sought on the following topics:

The physical spaces of Greek and Roman theatre

     * Current reconstruction work, both physical and virtual, of=20
important sites
     * how such sites might be used in conjunction with live performance=20=

for research and teaching purposes.

Ancient performance practice

     * How did the physical spaces of Greek and Roman theatre influence=20=

or define actual performance practice in Athens, Rome and other=20
locations?
     * The relationship between physical and virtual (in the sense of=20
mental, imaginative) space in ancient performance.

Reception Studies

     * What have later cultures (particularly since the Renaissance)=20
done with these ancient spaces
     * What other spaces have they chosen to use for Greek and Roman=20
theatre performances and how have these spaces changed the reception of=20=

the plays?

Reception in Australia and New Zealand

     * What are the trends and what is distinctive about the reception=20=

of Greek and Roman theatre in this part of the world?

To date there has not been a sustained examination of the reception of=20=

Greek and Roman theatre in Australia and New Zealand. The conference=20
convenors are looking to establish an informal network of researchers=20
in this field, and hope that the conference will provide a starting=20
point for this endeavour.

Deadline & submission

Proposals for presentations of 20 or 40 minutes duration, including=20
title and abstract of up to 200 words must be received by March 24,=20
2006.

Presentation formats

You may choose to present conventional academic papers, performed=20
papers, or performances.

Time and space for meaningful debate will be structured into the=20
proceedings (we welcome your suggestions).

Publication

A selection of papers will be published in a refereed academic journal=20=

after the conference.
