Call for Papers

The conference will consist of papers, group presentations and panel=20
discussions =96 one of which will deal with museum and gallery issues=20
with contributions from the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the=20=

Museum of London, and another with community issues based around the=20
teaching of London - others will deal with the role of London in=20
literary studies, history and geography.

The aim of this interdisciplinary conference is to explore the ways in=20=

which the past, present and future of London is taught or used in=20
teaching in a broad variety of disciplines and subject areas. By=20
bringing together those who make London and its themes and=20
representations part of their curriculum, it also aims to engage with=20
what it means in theory and practice to teach this major metropolis. We=20=

hope to have representatives from different types of institutions that=20=

have a stake in teaching London (universities, museums and schools), as=20=

well as those who feel they teach London in less traditionally-based=20
modules. We are keen to reflect a wide range of perspectives, including=20=

those of speakers from outside London. Subject-areas might include:=20
history, geography, town planning, architecture, art history, museum=20
studies, sociology, transport studies, science and technology, theatre=20=

studies, economics and business studies, mass media, modern languages=20
and linguistics.

Twenty-minute papers/ workshops are welcome on any issue related to=20
teaching London, as are panel sessions that may be proposed involving=20
three speakers. Possible topics are: What does it mean to teach London?=20=

London as an interdisciplinary subject; London as a teaching resource;=20=

What role does London play in different subject-areas? Teaching London=20=

as part of the UK; technology and teaching London; Audiences for=20
teaching London =96 who are we teaching and why? Londoners and=20
non-Londoners teaching London; teaching London as a multicultural city;=20=

London in a globalised/international context; electronic resources and=20=

the teaching of London.

There will be a drinks reception on the Friday evening at Tate Britain=20=

as part of the Late at Tate Event accompanying the publication of Iain=20=

Sinclair=92s new book on London.

Publication: Cambridge Scholars Press are interested in publishing a=20
selection of the proceedings from the Conference.
