Tampere, Finland, May 24-26 2007

Workshop:
"Violating the family"

Representations of, and challenges to, the “American family” abound in
twentieth century and contemporary American culture, which can be seen to
display a near obsessive preoccupation with kinship. Ideal families,
dysfunctional families, nuclear families, non-nuclear families, biological
kinship and social kinship affirm or unsettle normative notions of family.
While unconventional families, it can be said, do violence to the “normal”
American family, the norm itself also does violence to “non-traditional”
understandings and practices of family. The workshop welcomes theoretically
informed presentations on modern American texts that in various ways can be
read as violating boundaries of kinship norms, or, in other words, that “do
violence to” the family.
