“Terror at the edge”: Don DeLillo’s Passages, Transitions, and Liminal
Proposed Panel for the 39th Annual College English Association
Conference, St. Louis, Missouri, March 27-29, 2008, sponsored by the Don
DeLillo Society.

In Don DeLillo’s 2001 novel _The Body Artist_, Lauren Hartke describes
her struggle with belief in the unbelievable: “This is the stir of true
amazement. And some terror at the edge, or fear of believing, some
displacement of the self, but this is the point, this is the wedge into
ecstasy, the old deep meaning of the word, your eyes rolling upward in
your skull” (75). This panel seeks to understand these and other
dangerous or intermediary places in DeLillo’s fiction. Possibilities
include, but are not limited to, DeLillo and 9/11, DeLillo and terror,
DeLillo’s frequently marginal characters, or the many narrative and
critical “mysteries,” as DeLillo himself puts it, that simultaneously
shroud and illuminate DeLillo’s work. Interested presenters should send
their name, institutional affiliation (if applicable), mailing address
(including zip code), phone number, email address, title for the proposed
presentation, abstract of 200-500 words, AV equipment needs (if any), and
special needs (if any) to Jesse Kavadlo, Maryville University,, by October 20, 2007. All presenters must join CEA
by January 1, 2008 to appear on the program.
