Papers and participants being sought for the Conference and Essay collection on the historical,
literary and broader cultural significance of Walsingham, the medieval pilgrimage site to the Virgin
Mary, which was been revived in the Twentieth Century. Modern accounts have generally focused on
historical origins, theology, or personal devotion: while these approaches will not be ignored,
essays are especially sought on artistic, anthropological, architectural, poetical (e g Erasmus, Byrd,
Ballads, Ralegh, Hamlet, Hopkins, Eliot, Lowell), and Walsingham's broader cultural impact and
significance including gender, sexuality, pilgrimage, cultural nostalgia, magic, goddess religion.
Poems and photo-essays would be considered. The Conference will now take place March 13-16,
2008, with discussions, tours, performances and with accommodation provided in the modern
Shrine. Some places remain, including some participants who need not present papers. Those with
interests from the 18th century to the present especially sought. Deadline November 15.
