Love and Conquest
Graduate Conference
Saint Louis University, Madrid, Spain
May 29-30, 2008

>From the dominance of the gods to the exploration of the world, from
memories of desire to representations of obsession, passion has led to
great advances in mapping the body and penetrating the continents. At
the 6th-annual Saint Louis University Madrid graduate conference, we
invite our peers to do some scouting of their own into the territories
of "Love and Conquest." What boundaries are laid and by whom? What
motivations emerge as truly culpable in the lust for power and property?
In what forms do acts of resistance manifest?

Although by no means comprehensive, consider the following list of
possible topics:

-The Body and Geographic Space in Literature

-Seeking a Utopia and Finding the Other

-Points in Time, Places on the Globe

-The Suppression of Desire and Cultures of Subversion

-Acts of Naming and the Remapping of Language

-Decentralization and Post-colonialism

-Manifest Destiny and Phallocentrism

Presentations will be 15 minutes in length. Submissions of 300-word
proposals (abstracts only—no full papers) along with short bios should be
sent to before March 1.
