Wales and West Gothic Network

Inaugural conference on ‘Gothic Locations’ (Friday 19th September 2008)

Keynote Speakers: Prof Jane Aaron and Prof Nick Groom

‘Gothic Locations’ is jointly organised by the University of Glamorgan and
Cardiff University. It will be staged at Cardiff University. The conference
will address how the Gothic represents the notion of ‘place’ as a literary,
cultural, historical, or ideological formation. Themes which contributors
may wish to consider include:

The Gothic and national identity
The Gothic and regional identity
The regional contexts of the Gothic (e.g. ‘folklore’, ‘myth’, ‘Cornish Gothic’)
The relationships between different national contexts (e.g. between Wales,
Scotland, and Ireland)
The relationship between region and nation
Locating textual hybridity â€" folklore and the Gothic, myths of horror
Colonial/Postcolonial Gothic
Places: Buildings, Institutions, Libraries
The Countryside, Maps

The Wales and West Gothic Network was established in 2007 in order to share
ideas and to develop a research culture founded on the Gothic forms which
are relevant to the location of the participating institutions. The Network
consists of the Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Bath Spa, Bristol,
Cardiff, Exeter, Glamorgan, Swansea, and the West of England.

Papers which reflect on the areas where these institutions are located will
be particularly welcome, although the conference organisers welcome papers
which address any aspect of the conference theme.

Please send 200 word abstracts for 20 minute papers by April 7th 2008 to
the conference organisers.
