The Eighth Annual Wenshan International Conference

English Department, National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan

Conference theme: Literature and Violence

Violenceâ€"in the form of justification for it and stricture against it, of
appreciation and fear of it, of gratification and remorse resulting from
itâ€"has always been a vital element of literature and of the culture that
is the shared context in which both literature and violence appear. The
traditional genres of epic, tragedy, and comedy, forms that Aristotle
called “imitations of men in action,” are in part means of organizing the
representation of violence and/or the threat or possibility of violence.
The Eighth Annual Wenshan International Conference, organized by the
English Department of National Chengchi University, Taipei, aims to
uncover and shed light on the varied facets of violence as it appears in
literature, and clarify the connections between literature and the larger
culture that produces it.
