THE ALAN PATON CENTRE 20TH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE
THIRD CALL FOR PAPERS

The Alan Paton Centre & Struggle Archives at the University of KwaZulu-
Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, is holding an international
conference as part of the celebrations of its twentieth anniversary.
Title: The Alan Paton Centre 20th Anniversary Conference
Theme: Alan Paton and his life and work and topics related to the
collections of the Alan Paton Centre
Keynote speaker: Professor Peter Alexander, of the University of New
South Wales, who will also deliver the Alan Paton Lecture
Dates: 15- 17 July 2009
Venue: The African-themed Ascot Inn and the Alan Paton Centre & Struggle
Archives on the University campus, both in Pietermaritzburg
Possible topics for papers or other presentations could include:
â€¢ The activities and holdings of the Alan Paton Centre and its
value for researchers, whether in / of KwaZulu-Natal or elsewhere.
â€¢ Research conducted at the Alan Paton Centre on any of its
â€¢ Re-assessments, whether revisionist or not, of Patonâ€™s
contributions as a religious / political / educational / literary figure
and his current significance for South Africa.
â€¢ The religious / political / social / literary / historical
contexts of the different phases of his work.
â€¢ Considerations of Patonâ€™s work, especially that less commonly
researched, such as
ï€¼ His early fiction.
ï€¼ His work for theatre.
ï€¼ His poetry.
ï€¼ His shorter fiction.
ï€¼ His essays.
ï€¼ His biographies.
ï€¼ Linguistic analyses of his speeches and other work / The
relationship between Patonâ€™s language and his context.
ï€¼ His life.
ï€¼ His autobiographical works.
â€¢ Place, time and identity in his novels.
â€¢ Comparative studies between his writing and that of other authors.
â€¢ Audio-visual presentations.
As part of the conference, delegates will be able to take tours to places
associated with Paton and his literary environment, such as â€˜Patonâ€™s
Pietermaritzburgâ€™. Book launches and links with other conferences such as
that of the Association of University English Teachers of Southern Africa
are also envisaged.
Young researchers and academics from the African continent are
particularly invited to take part.
Please send abstracts for papers and/or posters to
alanpaton2009_at_ukzn.ac.za by 30 January 2009. The Abstract must contain
the title of the paper/poster; your name and email address; must be in MS
Word format using 12pt New Times Roman font; and single line spacing.
Should you wish to attend all or part of the conference without taking
part in the programme or presenting a paper, please reply to the above
