CFP: [International] Sound, Silence and Literature

Garrett Stewart in Reading Voices: Literature and the Phonotext
writes: “When we read to ourselves, our ears hear nothing. When we read,
however, we listen.” Whether it is listening to one’s reading voice,
music, film or drama - audition plays a central role in how we engage
with art. This interdisciplinary symposium invites papers that explore
the ways in which sound and silence are formally manipulated and
represented in art. While vision has been the dominant mode for
understanding truth and knowledge in modernity, this one-day symposium
will examine alternative narratives that reveal the cultural significance
of auditory perception.

Topics may include but are not limited to:
 - the relationship between sound and subjectivity
 - sound in radio, film, drama, and art
 - the sound of poetry
 - the influence of developing auditory technologies on sound perception
and literature
 - the representation of sound and audition in literature
 - audition as a narrative technique
 - the political implications of sound, noise, and silence
 - postmodernism and silence
 - aesthetics and silence
