Call for Papers on two Topics: Hemingway and Material Culture /
Hemingway and Africa

    Hemingway and Material Culture.

    I invite expressions of interest from scholars interested in writing =
an original scholarly essay (25-30 pages) on Hemingway's involvement =
with the material culture of his day, both in his life and in his work. =
Questions to be explored: How did Hemingway relate to material objects? =
How do material objects (guns, magazines, clothes, swords, chairs, =
boats, drinks, doors, cars, hotels, pictures, sleeping bags, what have =
you) function in his poetry, fiction, journalism, book-length =
nonfiction, letters, and other writings? How do they connect to the =
physical and fictional body? to his construction of his own persona? to =
his treatment of the natural environment? What are the implications of =
these connections? And how have others connected objects to Hemingway =
and to his writing? How have he, his characters, his life style, and his =
literary style, been commodified? Interested scholars please write to =

    Hemingway and Africa (or Hemingway in Africa, or Africa in =
Hemingway's Writing)

    I invite expressions of interest from scholars interested in writing =
an original scholarly essay (25-30 pages) on Hemingway's writing on =
Africa, with focus on the the two safaris, Green Hills of Africa, True =
at First Light (in its various incarnations), "Snows of Kilimanjaro," =
"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," African materials in other =
works (e.g, the African story in Garden of Eden) and his letters and =
journalism on Africa and African topics: hunting, landscape, myth, =
conservationism, gender and body issues (e.g., scars) as they connect to =
Hemingway's African experiences and his Africa-based reading and =
