Chopin and the City

Panel sponsored by The Kate Chopin International Society for the American=20
Literature Association 18th Annual Conference, May 24-27, 2007, Boston,=20
MA.

Kate Chopin?s The Awakening begins in the seemingly pastoral setting of=20
Grand Isle and then makes an all important move to the urban setting of=20
New Orleans, illustrating in metafictional fashion the imbrication of the=20
regional (typically rural) with the realist/naturalist (typically urban).=20
Indeed, in the majority of realist and naturalist works, the city or the=20
cityscape functions almost as a character in its own right, illustrated=20
through the characters? interaction with its many blandishments as well as =

its dangers. Kate Chopin?s writing often figures the city as central in=20
its effects upon, reflections of, and illusory promises to the characters. =

This panel, sponsored by the Kate Chopin International Society, proposes=20
to examine Chopin?s use of the city in her works. Interdisciplinary=20
approaches which take into account contemporary economics, gender=20
politics, sociological developments, and psychological theories,=20
particularly those concerning women, are encouraged, but the panel is open =

to other approaches as well. Panelists are strongly encouraged to explore =

Chopin?s lesser known works in addition to her The Awakening.

Please send 250-400 word proposals and a short biographical statement to=20
Mary E. Papke at papke_at_utk.edu by December 22, 2006.
