This is a preliminary call for proposals for a collection of essays about
generalist practices in English scholarship and teaching.

The editors seek essays that help to theorize the distinctive practices of
those who identify themselves as "generalist" scholars in English
Departments of any size, especially in smaller ones. We conceive of
generalism as intellectually intensive and rewarding, as a mode with
surprising challenges and pleasures, and as one which allows its
practitioners to grow beyond the specialist identities they honed in
graduate school. We think of generalism as bridging subfields in the
discipline, as achieving a synergy between teaching, scholarship, and
service, and as offering an alternative to increasing fragmentation.
Possible topics might include definitions of generalist intellectual
inquiry, generalist scholarship; the rewards and challenges of generalist
teaching, generalist pedagogy; and standards for the evaluation of
generalist practices.

Please send 500-word abstracts for 10-15 page papers by 15 April to Shawn
Gillen (gillens_at_beloit.edu), Lawrence Moe (lawrence.moe_at_metrostate.edu), or
John Ottenhoff (ottenhoff_at_alma.edu).
