_Is it Terminal?: Reinventing the Master's Degree in English Studies_

Enrollments in MA programs across the country are up dramatically, and
non-PhD granting institutions are turning to the MA as a locus of
programmatic growth. Changes in hiring patterns at the high school and
community college level have enlivened possibilities for the MA. What
can or should the MA in English be? To what and whom is it appropriate?
What are its limitations?

Proposals are sought for a collection of essays that explores the
relevance, status, and function of a Master's Degree in English Studies.
Possible topics include: "best practices" in MA curricula; the MA in
English Studies as a professional degree; the MA as preparation for the
PhD; the MA and teacher training; marketing and administering the MA;
the MA and traditional notions of mastery, "coverage," and preparation
of "the generalist." The co-editors solicit broad and innovative
perspectives on the Master's Degree: e.g., cross-institutional linkages,
interdisciplinary initiatives, and attempts to reconcile the
composition/literature divide, as well as rigorously theorized program
descriptions and personal essays by students and faculty. Send
detailed, one-page abstracts or complete essays by email attachment no
later than October 1, 2004 to Anne Clark Bartlett and Peter Vandenberg
