Bloodlust and Dust: Essays on HBO's Carnivale

Essays are invited which examine and explore Carnivale, HBO's drama set
during the 1930s in America's Dust Bowl. Any approach is welcome, but some
topics of interest are listed below. Essays will be edited by two editors
and are expected to conform to standard academic format and citation
protocol. The editors are eager to receive creative, dynamic essays on this
unusual show.

A proposal including a 250-word abstract, provisional title, short bio, and
provisional bibliography is due via email by May 1st 2007. Essays accepted
into the collection will be due no later than September 1, 2007; word count
should be between 2500 and 4000 words. This collection will be published
sometime in 2008.

Narrative structure
Occult symbology
Opening credit sequence
Sexuality or gender themes
Carnival imagery
Production design
Death and dying
Religion and/or spirituality
Paranormal ability
Landscape and/or art direction
Dreams and visions
Tarot and/or divination
Burlesque and performance
"Freaks" and disability/deformity
