Announcing the debut issue for the General Education Composition Area
of The Writing Instructor

TOPIC: Good Theory / Best Practices: (Re)Invigorating the General
Education Composition Classroom

We are now accepting submissions for the debut issue of The Writing
Instructor’s General Education Composition Area. Many people find in
graduate school a rich blend of theory and practice while studying
theory and teaching first-year composition courses. Afterwards they
often find themselves either focused on theory at research universities
or on best practices at teaching colleges. The synergy of years of
experience on both sides is potentially great for theory and practice.
This synergy is most visibly manifest in General Education Composition,
a course or series of courses that universities and colleges (four-year
and two-year) commonly require as the basis of a core curriculum for a
liberal education.

Here are some suggestions for especially pertinent topics:

• Best practices in the General Education composition classroom
• Applying theory to best practices
• Applying best practices to theory
• Closing the Assessment Loop
• Academic Integration and the importance of composition skills to a
college education
• General Education composition and the Writing Center
• Teaching research and synthesis
• Contextualizing composition studies to ignite student interest
• General Education composition and learning communities
• Linking theory and practice to the world outside the institution,
including Service Learning

TWI is a refereed, networked journal and digital community sponsored
inter-institutionally by Purdue University and California State
University, San Marcos. Published as a print journal until 1996 and
making its digital debut in August 2001, TWI aims in its new format to
bring much-needed coherence to the broad and influential developments
in the teaching of writing that have occurred over the past twenty
years, with the aim of setting the stage and marking a precedent for
the future of writing instruction as a pedagogical and scholarly
enterprise conducted in a variety of media for a diverse constituency
across a wide range of venues. To accomplish this goal, we want to take
advantage of the many resources available to us as our field manifests
itself in the digital space of the Internet. TWI’s Editorial Board
consists of distinguished teachers and scholars in the field, with
expertise in the teaching of writing at all levels of instruction, from
K-12 through college.

Submissions of 3,000 – 9,000 words should be sent as attachments in
MSWord, RTF, or PDF format to Jefferey Taylor,
Arrangements can also be made for uploading hypertexts and multimedia

The deadline for consideration in the debut issue of the General
Education Composition Area of TWI is 1 August 2004. After that
submissions are accepted on a revolving basis.
