CALL FOR PAPERS

Performing Maternity in Early Modern England

Editors seeking articles for a proposed book-length collection entitled
Performing Maternity in Early Modern England. Finished articles should be
between 5000-8000 words (detailed proposals will be considered), and should
explore the representation of early modern English maternity and the extent
to which it became a locus of concern socially, culturally, religiously,
poetically, narratively, and dramatically.

The wealth of documents regarding maternity and childbirth (conduct books,
gynecology and obstetrical texts, midwifery manuals, etc.) fosters
opportunities for examining issues of fertility, conception, delivery, and
gendered constructions of maternity, paternity and fidelity in many kinds
of texts, including those in plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

Possible paper topics include how a pregnant, nursing, or maternal
character, writer, or speaker's femininity is suppressed or revealed, how
the popular materials describe and attempt to regulate the pregnant body,
or to what degree literary texts appropriate, interpret, and reinvent
representations of maternity. Other interpretations of the topic are also
welcome.

Send detailed proposals or finished articles by September 1, 2003 to both
editors:
