Call for Papers

41st International Congress on Medieval Studies

Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI

May 4-7, 2006

The Anchoritic Society is sponsoring three sessions at Kalamazoo in
2006:

Communities of Solitude: open to any interpretations of lives of chosen
solitude in medieval culture and life, and how those forms of devotion
and living interconnect with one another.

Versions, Transmissions, and Receptions--Anchoritic Textuality: papers
should focus on the various modes of transmission of anchoritic works,
rules (Gremlaic, Aelred, Ancrene Wisse, and the Dublin Rule) as well as
the different forms of transmission of the texts and the devotional
practices of recluses.

Christine Carpenter: Although the film Anchoress is generally the first
means by which most people approach the figure of Christine Carpenter,
this session is not intended for interpretations of the film,
necessarily, but rather any scholarship dealing with the historic figure
of Christine Carpenter and her experience as an anchoress.

Please send abstracts for twenty-minute papers by September 15th to
