Sports in the Middle Ages: Historical and Literary Approaches

The study of sports has always been important in our attempts to understand cultures both old and new, and this is certainly true for explorations of the Middle Ages. Important scholarship in the last few decades has interrogated the sources and tried to uncover the role of sports in medieval society. In this vein, I welcome abstracts dealing with any aspect of sports in the Middle Ages. Topics may include, but are certainly not limited to, literary appropriations of sports, sources for understanding medieval sports, philosophy of sports, cultural history of sports, reactions against sports by the Church, etc.

Please send 200-250 word abstracts either electronically (in MS Word format please) to joshua.eyler_at_uconn.edu or by standard mail to the address I've posted below by September 15th. Include with your abstract any requests for A-V equipment. Please know that the Congress Committee allows participants to read only one paper each year, and that papers will be held to a 20-minute time limit.
