CFP: Layamon's Brut Society (9/15/06; Kalamazoo, 5/10/07-5/13/07)

The International Layamon’s Brut Society is pleased to announce two sessions
for the 42nd
International Congress on Medieval Studies, Western Michigan University,
Kalamazoo, MI, May 10-13,
2007.

1. The first session, “Layamon and Translatio,” seeks papers that address all
aspects of translation and
translation theory in the Brut. Possible topics include, but are not limited
to, implications of Layamon
as translator of Wace's Roman de Brut, instances of translation within the
Brut and their relation to
Layamon's vision of history, the Brut and the Anglo-Norman and English
translatio imperii, and
translations of the Brut, both medieval and post-medieval.

2. The second session—“Layamon’s Brut: Historical and Political Contexts”—asks
for papers that
examine the the Brut's interaction with its historical, political, and
cultural environment. Possible topics
include: Layamon and English cultural identity, Layamon and the 1209
interdict, the Brut manuscripts
and the Baronial revolt, and others.
