FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE GOWER SOCIETY: “1408-2008:THE AGE OF
GOWER”
13-16 JULY 2008

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR SPECIAL SESSION ON GOWER AND IBERIA
Session Organizer: María Bullón-Fernández, Seattle University
E-mail: bullon_at_seattleu.edu

SEND PROPOSALS BY 10 SEPTEMBER 2007 TO SESSION ORGANIZER

The recent discovery of Robert Payn’s late medieval Portuguese translation
of Gower’s Confessio Amantis has spurred new studies on both this
translation and the longer-known Castilian translation by Juan de Cuenca.
This session invites proposals for papers that build on this work or focus
on any other aspect related to Gower and Iberia. Papers, for instance,
could address any of the following topics: the historical and political
circumstances surrounding the translations; the choices made by the
translators; the manuscripts that contain the translations; the possible
influence of Gower’s Confessio on Portuguese and Castilian literature;
Gower’s possible ties to any of the medieval Iberian kingdoms, including
any possible influences of the literature from these kingdoms, their
history, and culture, on Gower himself, or any references to Iberia in
Gower’s work. Interdisciplinary papers and papers with an explicit
theoretical grounding in translation studies, cultural studies, or
literary theory are particularly welcome.

Feel free to send any questions to the session organizer. Further
information about the conference can be found at the John Gower Society
