“Essentialist Joyce?â€
The International James Joyce Foundation invites proposals for 15-minute
papers to be presented at the Louisville Conference on Literature and
Culture since 1900. The conference will take place at the University of
Louisville, on February 21-23, 2008. Please send abstracts related to one
or more of the questions listed below to Agata Szczeszak-Brewer at
brewera_at_wabash.edu by October 3. Are Joyce’s characters defined by an
unchanging “essence Does Joyce subvert a colonial Manichaean perspective
in his fiction and political writing? Could cross-sections of
anthropology, political science, and postcolonial theory help us
understand Joyce’s interrogation of chauvinism, nationalism, racism, and
patriarchy? Does Joyce employ, in Spivak’s words, “strategic essentialismâ€
in his construction of Bloom and other characters?
