The Institute for Medieval Research at the University of Nottingham is sponsoring and hosting a
one-day interdisciplinary postgraduate conference on the relationship between ‘belief’ and ‘time’
throughout the Middle Ages (ca.300-1600). The conference will take place on 30 May 2008. The
aim of the conference is to explore intersections of these themes in all areas of research and we
invite papers from all fields of medieval studies. Suggested topics may include, but are not
limited to:

 Dying religious beliefs and beliefs of the dying
 Monuments of belief (grave covers, sepulchres, churches etc.)
 Time as a facet of belief
 The transition from pagan to Christian faith
 The rise and fall
 Superstitions, science, and magic in time
 The representation of faith in medieval texts, art, and ritual
 Recurring topoi in hagiographies and exempla
 Intersections of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian beliefs in the Middle Ages
 The conversion of individuals or groups in the Middle Ages
 Changing rituals and laws
 The invention of ‘beliefs’

We have confirmed two plenary speakers: Prof Richard Marks (York) and Dr Richard Marsden
(Nottingham). We would like to invite papers from postgraduates in all disciplines working on
any aspect of European medieval culture. The conference fee will be £5 for students and £15 for
