Call for Papers

Title: “Figuring Crime: Women and the representation of crime in medieval
and early modern English text
Was female criminality indeed an abberation of the norms of feminine
behavior, or was women's criminality as ideologically central to
Elizabethan and Jacobean dramas, or ballads, and 'anti-feminist'
literature actually accurately representative of the way that aristocratic
and ordinary people perceived their social environment, relationships and
institutions. Examining the intersection of women's crime (or involvement
in crime) and culture, can reveal the ways in which women negotiated the
terms of subordination to men, as well as ways in which they might
manipulate popular notions of their ambivalent status. Contributors are
encouraged to explore various aspects of crime involving the women who
either committed them or somehow participated in them, and to analyze how
culture constructs (that) crime and criminals. Possible topics may
include representations of (women) criminals in plays, diaries, letters,
the visual representation of (women's) criminality, the rhetoric of their
crime or the rhetoric of their criminal confessions. and the
representation of the evasion of its punishment and innovative
(public/private/political) spaces of criminal acts.
