The Fletcher Lecture Series Committee of Nicholls State University is
pleased to announce the Second Fletcher Lecture Series Conference,
featuring a keynote address by Gerald Early, the 2007 Fletcher Lecturer.
The conference will be held November 9, 2007, on the campus of Nicholls
State University, Thibodaux, Louisiana, located in the Bayou Region of
South Louisiana (1 hour from New Orleans or Baton Rouge; 1 1/2 hours from
Lafayette).

General Subject: "Crossings: Assimilation and Acculturation"

Submission deadline: September 15, 2007 (earlier submissions encouraged)

Proposal topics may be narrowly focused on any aspect of Gerald Early's
career and accomplishments or broadly focused on any aspect of the title
concerns: cross-racial/cross-cultural literary encounters, assimilation,
acculturation. Potential topics may be cross-disciplinary (particularly
in history and sociology) as long as the focus remains humanistic rather
than technical. Sample topic areas include:

• African-American concerns addressed in children's literature
• Protest literature
• Crossing racial barriers in American sports
• The Blues
• The Harlem Renaissance
• The literature of Affirmative Action
• Gerald Early's works, historical contexts, and contributions,
especially to our understanding of American culture (sports, music, etc.)

The Thursday evening (November 8) keynote address by Gerald Early will be
followed by the conference on Friday (November 9). Proceedings volume
anticipated.

To submit a proposal for an individual presentation, send a title (8-word
maximum), a 250-word abstract, and a 50-word (maximum) summary for the

overall panel; cite individual participants (names, presentation titles,
brief overviews). Submit abstracts via email to
