CFP: George Oppen Centenary Panel (9/15/07; NEMLA 4/10/08 - 4/13/08)

39th Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
April 10-13, 2008
Buffalo, New York

April 24, 2008 will mark the birth centenary of George Oppen. In anticipation of this, the George Oppen Centenary Panel (April 10 â€" 13; NeMLA)
seeks in particular new readings of Oppen, but will also consider significant developments of or departures from familiar or established frames in
which his work has been received. Possible topics may include: reconsiderations of the relationship(s) between Oppen’s politics and his poetry;
Oppen in context (e.g. the Imagists, the Objectivists, but especially outside those frames); the poetics of Oppen’s interviews, letters, and/or prose;
Oppen’s work to import philosophy and ethics into American poetry. Given the occasion of his centenary and the aim of the panel to explore new
ways of reading Oppen, the panel will be especially interested in papers that work with the Oppen archive record (e.g. the “daybooks,” the reading
notes, etc.); that work to reconsider the partnership between George and Mary Oppen; that consider Oppen’s later poetry in relation to memory
and/or illness; that offer extensions of Oppen’s relation to and influence on younger poets and/or subsequent poetics.

Send abstracts of 250 â€" 500 words and a brief CV (no more than one page, please) to Andrew Rippeon (, by September 15,
