The Performing "i": E. E. Cummings, Modernist Form, and Cultural Voices
(9/25/07; Louisville,

The E.E. Cummings Society and the Society's journal, _Spring_, invite
abstracts for 20-minute papers for the 36th annual Louisville Conference on
Literature and Culture since 1900, February 21-23, 2008, at the University
of Louisville. This session explores Cummings' voices (lyricist, satirist,
painter, and playwright, etc.) as a performing artist who stages received
cultural forms or conventions in self-reflexive ways. We invite papers
that examine how Cummings' verbal and visual performance forms a unique
cultural critique beyond what is often perceived as experimental,
typographical aesthetic modernism. We also consider papers that deal with
all aspects of Cummings' broad engagement with modern culture in the fields
of criticism, literary genres, science, technology, visual and performing
arts, folk arts, popular culture, war and politics. Papers on reception to
Cummings and to Cummings' language and his relation to other writers are
also welcome.

Please send 250-300 word abstracts (double-spaced and titled) postmarked no
later than September 25th, 2007 to:
