The Emily Dickinson International Society invites proposals from persons
wishing to participate in a new Discussion Institute centering on the theme
of “Narrative in Dickinson’s Poetry.” We especially welcome approaches to
poems and letters that explore the implications of “narrative” and “lyric”
reading, hybrid combinations of these, or the ways narrative does or does
not apply to Dickinson’s writing. The Institute will take place on August
1, 2008 in Amherst, Massachusetts as part of the 2008 Annual Meeting and
feature poets Michael Ryan, Elizabeth Ellis and Benjamin Friedlander. Each
submitter whose proposal is accepted will be assigned to a workshop; the
leader of that workshop will contact members of his or her group with
instructions and a deadline for circulating papers. The final paper should
be the length of a normal conference paper (8-10 pages). All papers will be
circulated to members of a discussion group prior to the Institute so that
the workshop itself will consist wholly of discussion. Critical workshop
leaders will include Karen Sanchez-Eppler and Cynthia Hogue. Abstracts of
250 words on the Institute theme of “Narrative in Dickinson’s Poetry”
should be sent to Paul Crumbley ( or Cristanne Miller
( by May 15. For more information about the Annual
Meeting, go to
