Hymns as Literature
This panel being organized for the 2009 ALA conference will examine the
hymn as a vital literary genre of the American nineteenth century. Papers
examining any aspect of nineteenth-century hymnody are welcome. Some
possible topics include performance, public or private; the gendering of
hymns; domesticity and the American hymn; the political hymn; the hymnal as
material object; the devotional use of hymns; and the interpolation of
hymns into other genres. Send a one-page abstract or finished paper no
longer than 10 pages and cv including current contact information to Dr.
Mary De Jong of Penn State Altoona at mld4_at_psu.edu by December 15, 2008.
