Call for Papers: 'turf' - edited by Peta Mitchell & Angi Buettner

Thirteen years ago, Kenichi Ohmae proclaimed that the world had become
"borderless," and the nation-state nothing more than a "bit actor" in a
globalised economy. Around the same time, "interdisciplinarity" appeared as
the prime strategy for breaking down the rigid stratifications of
traditional disciplines, promising an equivalently borderless academe.
However, despite the rhetoric of globalisation and interdisciplinarity,
territorial boundaries - both physical and conceptual - remain in evidence
and under contention.

The territories that these borders mark out are not neutral spaces, but
highly politicised turfs, themselves fragmented by conflicting interests
and agendas. But what do we mean when we talk about turf? It can refer to
what we claim (our turf) and to what we reject (what we turf out). While
"turf wars" rely upon competing claims for cultural, spatial, or
intellectual exclusivity, the word "turf" itself is intrinsically
transcultural, sharing an Indo-European root with the Sanskrit darbha or
"tuft of grass." Moreover, in this sense of the word, turf can be carved up
and exploited, burned for fuel; however, as a living network of roots and
soil, it is also resilient and transplantable.

Turf is, then, a word rich in complex and contradictory meanings, and, as
the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Australia's recent "History
Wars" bear out, turf is still critical. As such, M/C's first issue for 2004
is devoted to critical encounters with turf. The editors would welcome
papers addressing such issues as geopolitics and the legal aspects of
territorial claims, territorial representations and their implications
(e.g. maps, map culture, GIS, indigenous art, etc.), turf wars of any
variety (e.g. physical, disciplinary, media, etc.), or any issue that falls
within or disrupts the boundaries of "turf".

M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998
as a place of public intellectualism analysing and critiquing the meeting
of media and culture. Contributors are directed to past issues of M/C
Journal for examples of style and content, and to the submissions page for
comprehensive article submission guidelines. M/C Journal articles are blind
peer-reviewed.

deadline for submissions: 19 January 2004
article length: 1500 words
