Cather’s Circles: Correspondence and Connections
A Symposium Celebrating the Roscoe and Meta Cather Collection at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska, June 4, 2008

On June 4, 2008, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries and the Willa
Cather Project, UNL Department of English, is hosting a symposium to
celebrate the Roscoe and Meta Cather Collection, the core of which is
nearly 400 letters Willa Cather wrote to her brother Roscoe, his wife and
daughters, and other members of the family.

In order to recognize the value of this new collection, we are seeking
20-minute papers that investigate Cather’s letters and/or the wide and
varied groups of friends and family with whom she corresponded. What does
Cather’s correspondence tell us about her personal and professional
associations and how those connections influenced her work? What do her
letters reveal about her creative process? How are the private
articulations of the letters different from Cather’s public voice? How
does the absence of certain letters from the available recordâ€"such as the
correspondence with Edith Lewis and Isabelle McClungâ€"color our
understanding of Cather? How has the legend of Cather and Lewis’s letter
burning modified our interpretations of Cather’s life and works? Essays
drawing upon the Roscoe and Meta Cather collection are welcome, but the
scholarship may be based on other collections and letters as well.

Proposals should take the form of a 250-500 word abstract submitted
electronically (as an email attachment in MS Word or RTF format) to Andrew
Jewell (

Deadline for proposals is January 31, 2008; acceptances will be finalized
by the end of February 2008.
