"In Memory of Octavia Butler: Teaching Butler's Fiction" - a proposed session
for the Midwest Modern Language Association Nov 9-12 in Chicago.

In light of Octavia Butler's sudden death in early March, this panel seeks
papers that explore the use of Butler's fiction in the academy. While there is
an increasing amount of important critical work on Butler, this panel is
interested in papers that explore how her fiction has been employed in academic
departments and courses. In particular, this panel seeks papers that examine
how Butler's work is deployed in different theoretical and academic paradigms,
including eco-criticism, science fiction theory, trauma theory, memory studies,
African American studies and the African American canon, American literature,
Women's Studies, etc. Presentations addressing specific assignments or papers
that deal with Butler's work, her placement in specific course syllabi, her use
of history, student responses to Butler's work are all applicable.

Please e-mail 500 word abstracts and a short CV by 3/20 to beadling_at_purdue.edu

Thanks!
