This year, our special SAMLA session on country lyricists will explore the
many dark themes of country music. Submissions may range from the public
tribulations of natural disaster, grave accidents, and war to the private
tragedies of addiction, abuse, and obsession. Papers may follow a single
theme as addressed by many songwriters (i.e., “The ‘Burning Bed’ Scenario
in 1990’s Country Music”) or may focus on a single songwriter’s treatment
of a theme (i.e., “Porter Wagoner and Revenge Fantasy”). Authors should
remember that this session emphasizes the work of the lyricists and not
the performers of discussed pieces. Send to holmest_at_etsu.edu by June 15,
