CFP: Graduate Students at Scholarly Journals (3/19/07; MLA '07)

We would like to invite proposals for a possible special topics
session at MLA 2007 titled "Redlining R.A.s: The Role of Graduate
Students at Scholarly Journals." Motivated by the belief that
graduate students benefit from exposure to as many aspects of the
field as possible--not to mention that editorial work can be an
alternative job track for graduates with English degrees--this
roundtable session will explore facets of graduate student work at
academic journals.

Meant to dovetail with a CELJ roundtable already planned--"What
Journal Editors Do," a "nuts-and-bolts" session featuring faculty and
professional editors as well as one student spokesperson--this panel
will present a range of graduate student perspectives, inquire into
the benefits and challenges of editorial work as part of the
educational and professionalizing process, provide insight into how
research assistantships vary among scholarly publications, and
encourage editors and graduate students to consider the value of such
positions--both to students and to journals. This panel is conceived
less as a formal presentation of research papers and more as an
opportunity for graduate students to share their views and
experiences with a mixed audience.

If you are interested in participating, please send a paragraph
describing the approach you would take to a 6- to 8-minute
presentation-that is, specifying what aspect of graduate student
editorial labor you feel inspired to address. (The short prepared
talks will allow time for robust discussion afterward.) Topics might
include what students gain from assistantships at journals, what
journals gain from student involvement, tales of personal experience
in an R.A. position, or specific discussion of the tasks often
assigned to R.A.s.

All graduate students currently employed at academic journals, in any
area of the humanities (not just literary scholarship), as well as
any member of the profession who has been employed at a journal
during their graduate study is encouraged to submit a proposal. In
light of the rapidly approaching MLA deadline submissions should be
sent by 19 March to Jessica Schubert McCarthy (jesmccarthy_at_wsu.edu).
