GODDESSES AND QUEENS:
THE ICONOGRAPHY OF ELIZABETH I

While most aspects of the remarkable rule and career of Elizabeth I of England
have been exhaustively considered, the extensive iconographical repertoire used
to figure her in literature, derived primarily but not exclusively from
classical mythology, has not been systematically addressed. This collection
proposes to fill that gap by bringing together essays on the principal
figurings and personae deployed by and in connection with the queen. Topics to
be covered include, but are not limited to, Dido, Semiramis, Diana, Cynthia,
Judith, Deborah, the Virgin Mary, the Queen of Sheba, the fairy queen, and the
goddess Isis. Please send abstracts of c. 250 words by 1 March 2004 to Lisa
Hopkins or Annaliese Connolly, School of Cultural Studies, Sheffield Hallam
University, Collegiate Crescent Campus, Sheffield S10 2BP UK; email [
mailto:L.M.Hopkins_at_shu.ac.uk ]L.M.Hopkins_at_shu.ac.uk or [
mailto:annalieseconnolly_at_hotmail.com ]annalieseconnolly_at_hotmail.com .
Completed essays, of approximately 7,000 words, will be due on 1 December 2004
and will be subject to refereeing.
