We seek proposals that contemplate the work of Fernando de Rojas in an
interdisciplinary and comparatist approach. The panel will be submitted
for the 2008 annual meeting of the Renaissance Society of America, which
will take place in Chicago (form more information on this conference visit
www.rsa.org)

Which is the place of Fernando de Rojas’s La Celestina in the context of
European humanist thought? How does it reflect the controversies and the
changes that were taking place? Papers might discuss (but are not limited
to) the following topics:

- the way in which the discursive texture of La Celestina articulates
ongoing philosophical, ideological, political or linguistic doctrines

- the dynamics of social, legal, and economic interaction in new urban
contexts

- the significance of the generic ambiguity of La Celestina

- the evolution of traditional Classical and Medieval genres into early
modern versions of the novel, such as the picaresque

- the way traditional genres were readapted to address these new topics

- humanist doctrines on modes of exemplarity and the role of literature as
moral and civic education
