Questions about John Milton's political and religious thought entered public discourse with urgency
after the events of 9/11; this panel (planned for RSA 2009 in Los Angeles) seeks to explore new
directions for such critical investigations. Recent work by theorists (including Slavoj Zizek, Alain
Badiou, and Jacques Derrida by way of Emmanuel Levinas, to name a few) have attended to
theological modes of thought to articulate new philosophical and political possibilities. This panel
calls for papers that put such discourses in dialogue with Milton's poetry and/or prose. Potential
topics include the relationship between nationalism and universalism, between messianism and
violence, between history and eschatology.
