RICTE Spring Conference 2009
Keynote Speaker, Padma Venkatraman

It is with great pleasure that we announce Padma Venkatraman as keynote
speaker for the annual Rhode Island Council of Teachers of English Spring
Conference. The conference will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from
8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at New England Institute of Technology, Warwick, RI.
Padma Venkatraman now has over a hundred popular science articles and poems
to her credit, and over 20 published books. Her first novel, Climbing the
Stairs, was released by Penguin-Putnam in May of 2008 to critical acclaim.
The Albertosaurus Mystery: Philip Currie's Hunt in the Badlands was
published in Summer 2006, and two books were released in Spring 2007: a
young adult biography about the first female professional astronomer,
Double Stars: The story of Caroline Herschel; and a collection of
mathematical folktales, entitled, Mathematwist: Number tales from around
the world.

Padma currently lives in Rhode Island and works part-time as Director of
Graduate Diversity Affairs at the University of Rhode Island as well as
Adjunct Faculty at the Graduate School of Oceanography. Her second novel,
Island’s End, has also been sold to Penguin.

This year’s conference theme is “The Literate & Diverse Classroom: A Work
in Progress.” In our effort to support this contemporary educational goal,
RICTE is interested in proposals presenting best practices in literacy as
it relates to the theme of diversity, including, but not limited to, the
following:

Reading and writing in ELA and across content areas
Literacy and assessments
Improving reading and writing in middle, high school, and undergraduate
classrooms
Critical inquiry and inquiry-based classrooms
Urban classrooms
Teacher collaboration
Teacher researchers

The RICTE conference committee requests that interested workshop presenters
send a proposal that clearly describes the theme or topic to be presented.
 E-mail submissions are acceptable.
