Philosophy as Advanced Composition

Wittgenstein's post-Tractatus rethinking of philosophy in terms of
grammar offers a new perspective on composition studies. If meaning is
governed by tacit rules of language that are changing and open-ended,
then philosophy might be resituated within composition. This panel
invites papers that model the composition of philosophical texts, discuss
the pedagogical implications of teaching philosophy as advanced
composition, or in some way reconsider composition as "one of the heirs
of the subject we used to call philosophy" (Blue & Brown Books).

Possible areas of research:

—Philosophy as a “form of writing”

—Readings of philosophical texts in terms of their composition—i.e.
identifying new arguments by attending to the selection or invention of
genres and styles through which they are made.

—Conversions of philosophy from critical theory to critical praxis

—Further definitions of composition as a discipline, in the wake of
arguments for philosophy’s end (e.g. Rorty, Lyotard, Foucault, and
Derrida, etc.) or transformation (e.g. Davidson, Habermas, Gadamer,
Ricoeur, etc.)

—Institutional and curricular realignments, as composition (re)orients
itself with respect to English and Philosophy departments

—Etc.
