CFP: [Romantic] Romantic Science seminar

Please submit abstracts for a one-day seminar on 'Romantic Science'.

The Research Centre for Literature, Arts, and Science (RCLAS) at the
University of Glamorgan (South Wales, UK) will host the next meeting of
the Wales and the West Romanticism Seminar, on 12 September 2008. This
will be on the subject of ROMANTIC SCIENCE. We are delighted to announce
that the plenary speaker will be Prof. Anne Janowitz, who will be
speaking on ’“Longing for Other Worlds”: The Plurality of Worlds Debate
and the Sciences of Infinity’.

We currently welcome abstracts for 20-min papers on the subject of
science and culture (novels, poetry, drama, pamphlets, periodicals,
visual culture) in the Romantic period. Topics to explore might include,
but are not confined to:

Science and the Romantic Imagination.
Medicine.
Machines.
Bodies.
Literary writings by scientists, or vice versa.
Science and the theatre.
Gothic science.
Inventions, discoveries, expeditions.
Religion and science.
Critiques of the Enlightenment.
Geography, Geology, Cartography.

Please send 100-200 word abstracts by Friday May 25th to the Research
Centre for Literature, Arts and Science (Prof Andrew Smith, Prof Jeff
