Call for Papers
MLA 2007 (Chicago, 12/27-12/30)

Proposed special session topic: Literary responses to ecological damage

When human activity initiates damage to, or wholesale destruction of,
natural environments, literature can serve as a medium for
justification, ambivalence, or resistance. This special session seeks
to explore contemporary fiction, poetry, and drama grappling with
negative, even potentially cataclysmic, human impact on natural
spaces. Subjects might include aquifer destruction, freshwater and/or
salt water fisheries destruction, mining, damming, deforestation,
nuclear waste, and the impacts of global warming. Papers that address
issues of class, race, and poverty are particularly welcome as are
papers from non-Western perspectives.

Please send a 250-300 word abstract in the body of an E-mail message
by March 23, 2007 to Katherine Ledford at
katnbrian_at_bakersville.com. Applicants will be notified shortly after
the deadline. Panelists must be members of MLA by April 1,
2007. Please note any audio/visual requirements and include your
contact information. With the cogency of the topic foremost in mind,
I will try to organize a session reflective of the variety of
professional positions in the creation of literary scholarship.
Please indicate university affiliation, if any, and academic rank.
