Performing Brazil

April 20-21, 2007
University of Wisconsin-Madison

This interdisciplinary conference seeks to examine why several elements of
Brazilian culture seem to lend themselves so well to performativity. Are
these elements inherently performative or are they made to be so? If so,
how, why, and by whom?

As participants redefine performance and recast it in a new light, other,
key issues will inevitably be drawn into the discussion, foremost among them
ethnicity, nationality (and nationalism), gender and identity politics, the
nature of escapism and illusion, and the relationship between ideology and
performance.

We invite scholars representing a wide range of disciplines and art forms to
submit proposals for papers or panels that consider the diversity of
performance in and of Brazil. Possible topics include:

· Popular music
· Carnaval
· Futebol
· Capoeira
· Candomblé
· Theatre (including Indigenous theatre) and performance
· Film in the 1990s and 2000s
· Telenovelas in the 1990s and 2000s
· Urban cordel
· Street preachers
· Favela chic
· The aestheticization of poverty
· Bailes funk
· Transvestism and other gender acts
