for the
21st Annual BTN Conference:
'Art and Protest: Bodies in Motion'

North Carolina A&T State University
In historic Greensboro, North Carolina
July 30 - August 2, 2007
With Greensboro, North Carolina, site of the first lunch counter sit-ins =
of the Civil Rights Movement, as a backdrop, Conference 2007 seeks to =
examine Theatre as a weapon of protest and a catalyst for social change. =
BTN is seeking panels, papers, and/or workshops that examine the early =
pioneers, theories and ideas of a movement, the evolution of art as =
protest, a new generation of traditional and hip-hop artist, and future =
implications for the arts. =20
This 21st Annual Conference runs concurrently with the National Black =
Theatre Festival held in Winston-Salem. Participate in daily BTN panel =
discussions and workshop activities, and enjoy thrilling performances =
from the National Black Theatre Festival schedule of productions. Free =
transportation will be provided from Greensboro to Winston-Salem to =
attend NBTF activities, compliments of the Black Theatre Network and =
North Carolina A&T State University.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:
*Protest and the Black Arts Movement: The Use of Art in Politics.
*Hip-Hop: A New Generation of Social Conscious and Protest Theatre
*Staging Guerilla Theatre
*Dignified Protest: The Black Experience Without Intimidation=20
*In Defense of Urban Drama: Artistic Freedom and Critical Repression
*Black Militant Theatre: Reflections of Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez
*Transcontinental Arts Wars: The Protest Theatre of Africa and America
Special Considerations: Submitted papers should be 10-20 pages in length =
and range between 20 to 30 minutes in presentation time. Accepted papers =
will be considered for publication in a forthcoming special issue of =
BTNews.
Notification: An acceptance/denial notice will be forwarded within one =
month of submission deadline. Presenters are encouraged to become =
members of the Black Theatre Network.
All presenters and panelist are responsible for their own transportation =
and lodging.
