We invite abstracts for short papers for a one-day conference on Sarah
Kane. The conference will be held at the University of Cambridge on 16th
February 2008. This event is jointly organised by the University of
Cambridge, Royal Holloway, and Anglia Ruskin University.
Sarah Kane has been catapulted into the contemporary canon. Her work has
been performed all over the world: articles and monographs are appearing
about her plays: she is a standard reference point for contemporary theatre
historians tracing the development of British theatre. But what Sarah Kane
do these histories construct? How far are we still seeing Kane through the
established critical lens and its now familiar reference points â€“ initial
critical hostility, first productions, violence, and autobiography? What
aspects of Kaneâ€™s work have we forgotten, obscured or denied? What are the
continuities and discontinuities between Kane, her predecessors and her
Twelve years on from Blastedâ€™s Royal Court debut affords us valuable
critical distance to reflect anew on Sarah Kaneâ€™s work and to challenge and
revivify her established critical reception. This conference aims to
unstick the labels with which she has become associated and provide fresh
readings that will question the mythologies growing up around her and her
We would like to receive proposals on any area of Kaneâ€™s work and we would
encourage innovative readings that cut productively against the grain of
dominant scholarly perceptions. It is hoped that profitable dissatisfaction
with current readings will excavate a space for new interrogation. The
purpose of this conference is not to undermine the value of previously
published Kane criticism but rather to re-view Kane in a new critical light.
